Elly Torre: Journey to Leadership

by Alan Ions

I am writing to share the inspiring story of Elly Torre, one of the most valuable players in our football team. Elly joined the club in 2013 as a 15 year old and has since become a respected veteran, having played 154 games for Heidelberg United. At only 26 years old, she is only a few games away from reaching the impressive milestone of 200 games.

Elly’s journey with Heidelberg United began when she played reserves football in 2013. Despite being a reserve player, she was determined to make it to the senior squad. Her dedication and hard work led to her selection to the senior squad for her debut senior game. Although it was only one game, it was a valuable lesson for Elly, who learned the importance of teamwork, perseverance, and determination. Over the next 11 years, Elly continued to play for Heidelberg United, becoming a tough defender who always gives her best on the field. Her dedication to the game and her team has earned her the respect of her teammates, coaches, and fans alike. Elly’s passion for football is evident in the way she plays, always putting her heart and soul into every game.

If not for the interruption of the COVID-19 pandemic in the 2019-2020 season, she would have been even closer to the 200 game milestone. Nonetheless, Torre remains optimistic about achieving this milestone in the future, as she still has time on her side.

Despite her impressive track record, Torre understands that the club is currently undergoing a period of transition. Under the new coach, Louie Spiridis, there are new and young players who will need guidance to help them navigate the transition period. As one of the veterans of the team, Torre recognises the importance of stepping up and providing leadership to these young players. Her dedication to the club and her willingness to guide the younger players during this period of transition is a testament to her character and her commitment to the club.

Torre is not alone in her role as a veteran player. She and fellow teammate Galea have both experienced title and cup wins, and are well-respected figures in the team. Torre’s commitment to the club goes beyond just her experience and accolades. She has had opportunities to go to other clubs, but as she stated herself, “why would I leave a club that is home?”

Elly Torre is a true veteran of the Heidelberg United women’s football team. Her experience, leadership, and dedication to the club make her an invaluable member of the team. As the club continues to navigate the challenges of transition, Torre’s contributions both on and off the field will undoubtedly play a crucial role in the team’s success this year.  I hope it inspires you to continue to support and encourage the talented players at our club, like Elly Torre.
