They’ve gone step for step over the past few seasons, trading blows and titles in a battle royale for bragging rights as the top team in Victorian NPL football.
Heidelberg United v Bentleigh Greens has become one of the must see encounters on the sporting calendar, and the latest chapter in the rivalry is set to be written at the Olympic Village this Saturday night.
For the victor, a chance to grab outright second spot on the table behind runaway league leader, Avondale – with the vanquished back amongst a cluster of teams fighting for spots three to six.
The ‘Bergers will be keen to get one back on the Greens, who have got the better of them in the last couple of encounters between the heavyweights.
Skipper and veteran of over 200 games, Luke Byles spoke of the desire for more success that drives the team ahead of this clash.
“We’ve played against them in many finals over the last few seasons. They’ve got one over us in the FFA Cup game last year, but that was tough for us to come back three days after our Premiership win. In the Community Shield match this year, we were underdone with an extended time off for many of the boys pre-season.
But, come Saturday night, we’ll be definitely going in for the jugular, going for the win to really kick start the season. Even though we’ve got to second spot, we’re yet to play our best football. Once we start firing on all cylinders, we feel we’re a match and more for most teams.”
With successive come from behind home wins in the past two fixtures, the ‘Bergers would love nothing more than chalking up another win over an ever combative Greens outfit.
The action kicks off at 6:00pm this Saturday (April 13) at the Olympic Village, with the Under 20s match starting at 4:00pm. HUFC TV will live stream the match from shortly before 6:00pm.
