FRIDAY NIGHT’S ALL RIGHT FOR ‘BERGER GULLY CLASH

The oft repeated refrain that “a week’s a long time in football” is somewhat of a cliché. Well, how would one describe the passage of three seasons’ worth of weeks? Far too much to ponder?

It was about that long that the legend of the ‘Cardiac Kids’ had its genesis. At 2-0 down against Green Gully away from home on the hour mark, the ‘Bergers were staring down the proverbial barrel on a day of, at first, wildly fluctuating weather patterns, to ultimately, the extremes of footballing feats.

Three goals in the last eight minutes of a frenzied finish, including a Reuben Way sizzler from 25 metres, gave Heidelberg a last gasp win and the vital three points. But, more than that, it started a three season long journey which has seen more than its fair share of late show dramatic wins and equalisers. In that time, Katsaskis’ charges have shown, grit, class and courage to extricate themselves from many difficult situations – testament to the collective resolve.

The 2020 version of Heidelberg United, with Reuben Way now the skipper, is still a work in progress. It faces its own test of grit, class and courage, when it once again travels to Green Gully for the Round 4 NPL clash this Friday, March 6 at 8:00pm.

The ‘Bergers face what will surely be a desperate Gully team that is still to register a point this season. Beware the wounded opponent? However, after a promising start to 2020, in which the ‘Bergers sit fourth on the table with two wins from starts, they’ll be eager to build on the back of a 3-1 win over Altona Magic last week. Gully went down 2-0 to Avondale FC in a final practice match.

If past meetings are any indications, they’ll be no love lost, plenty of action & likely a few goals amongst it all. Expect the unexpected is the word!

The Round 4 action kicks off this Friday (March 6) at 8:00pm at Green Gully Reserve. Subscribers to HUFC-TV can watch a live stream of the game from shortly before 8:00pm.
