NPLM Preview & Analysis: Heidelberg vs Port Melbourne

The Heidelberg United senior men’s team will host Port Melbourne at Olympic Park this Sunday afternoon, where they will be hunting for a crucial three points in NPL Victoria.

The Sharks have made an impressive start to the 2022 campaign remaining undefeated and sitting in the top half of the standings.

Port Melbourne has been led by head coach and club technical director Adam Piddick since 2018. In addition he oversees the development pathway of Junior NPL, having also recently graduated as a pro-licensed coach to add to his already formidable CV.

The Sharks have managed to keep several of their players from the previous season, whilst bringing in fresh faces to the club including experienced and highly regarded midfielder Troy Ruthven to the club. A familiar foe returns to Olympic Park after playing six years for the Warriors as a defender. Josh Wilkins will no doubt be a threat on the right hand side as he always has been.

Adding to an already star-studded attacking line up, promising youngster Luca Tevere will bring his vast knowledge of wealth of football having been in the Melbourne City youth program. Another signing which is sure to grab the attention of fans will be Fletcher Mcfarlane who arrived from NSW NPL side Wollongong Wolves, having also spent time with the Sydney FC NPL side.

Heidelberg will need to be at their best to come away with the three points against a side that has made a statement to the league this season.

The only head-to-head result between these two clubs in 2021 was a 3-1 win for the ‘Bergers at Olympic Park (Round 9).
