HALL OF FAME INDUCTEE (1999) – Medal of Excellence

A native of Dundee, Scotland, Jim Rooney was born in 1945 and arrived in Australia in 1968.

Rooney joined Melbourne’s Essendon Lions before moving to Sydney Prague, Apia Leichhardt, Marconi Fairfield, Heidelberg United as player/coach, and Croydon (Victoria). In 1977 he won the National Soccer League’s inaugural Player of the Year Award in 1977. Between 1971 and 1980, Rooney made 99 appearances for the national team, a number of these as captain and scored seven goals. As a midfielder in the 1974 World Cup series, Rooney had a never say die attitude, including tense qualifying matches against Iran in Tehran and South Korea in Hong Kong.
