Preview & Analysis: Heidelberg vs Oakleigh

Heidelberg United will host Oakleigh Cannons on Sunday afternoon at Olympic Park in Round 4 of the NPL Victoria men’s, setting their sights on another Greek derby.

The Warriors, hunting for their first win, know that they will be made to work against an Oakleigh side who have made a promising start to the new campaign – coming out as winners in two of the three rounds.

The Cannons have been led by head coach Chris Taylor for the last four years and has established himself as a prominent coach in the NPL. His record has seen Oakleigh steadily improve and be one of the more formidable sides in the league.

The Cannons have strengthened in all areas of the pitch, including the re-signing of star defender Oskar Dillon, who had an exciting first season providing crucial tackles in big moments. Jacob Eliopoulos and Aryn Williams have also re-signed with Oakleigh, who have become admirers within the supporters with their notable defensive performances.

Having just claimed a back-to-back NPL Tasmania Golden Glove award and an NPL Tasmania Championship, the signing of Lachlan Hart to Oakleigh will further bolster the goalkeeping team, along with veteran Nick Feely. The signing of Daniel Clark will add flair to the attacking line-up, and is a player who isn’t afraid to take players on and leave everything on the park.

The signings of attacking players Scott Lochhead and Nicolas Niagorian will bring experience from their previous clubs in England and the NPL, possibly linking up with Daniel Clark going forward.

The Warriors have had a difficult start to the current campaign, but they will be determined to win in the Greek derby this Sunday after putting in a much improved display last Friday, which the ‘Bergers were unfortunate to come away with nothing.

The backline will need to be at their best with an Oakleigh outfit that loves to go forward and attack with purpose.

The only head-to-head result between these two clubs in 2021 was a 1-1 draw at Jack Edwards Reserve (Round 2).
