Reuben Way signs on as skipper

Reuben Way

Heidelberg United has completed the re-signing of Reuben Way, who will also remain as captain for the senior men’s team in 2022.

Since taking the leadership role in 2020, it has been a tricky couple of years for Way due to COVID-19 and injury, but with a potentially normal upcoming season ahead of us, he cannot wait to lead the charge once again.

For a Heidelberg squad still rebuilding, Way remains as one of the main experienced heads in the line-up.

“I’m looking forward to having football back as it should be, and being involved in the community,” he said.

“I’ve had to earn my stripes over the years from a leadership point of view, but now that I’m part of the culture and fabric of the club, I’m really keen to take on this responsibility.

The two years that I have been captain were very challenging, so I’m excited to open the floodgates and get out of this COVID traffic so that I can actually be the captain in a full season.”

Way adds that he will love to see all the Bergers fans at Olympic Park once normality resumes.

“I’m looking forward to seeing all the familiar faces that I’ve got to know and become fond of since I arrived at the club,” he said.

“There’s the entertainment factor too – we play football to compete, so I’m eager to get the wins on the board and get our club back to where it should be on the ladder.”
