The Heidelberg United Alexander family lost one of its greatest this week, with the passing of former skipper, Pat Bannon. Born in Scotland in 1949, Bannon played 221 magnificent games for the club between 1973 and 1981. He joined then Fitzroy Alexander in 1973 and was a part of the team which won the 1975 Victorian State League.
Bannon, one of three brothers to play senior football in Australia during that golden era, passed away last Tuesday in Tasmania. He was an on-field leader and rugged central defender, remains a Warrior legend for his role in Heidelberg’s remarkable rout of mighty Sydney City in the 1980 NSL Grand Final.
Bannon captained the Warriors to that stunning 4-0 triumph. Always remembered by teammates as a wonderful mate off field, Bannon was a gifted defender who was also feared by opponents and considered a protector of younger Warrior players as they moved into senior football.
Legend says it takes a mighty wind to lift a great soul to the heavens. The winds blew strong across Catalina Street this week.
