Heidelberg Tames the Lions at the Den

Preston Lions 0 – 1 Heidelberg United

In a clash defined by historical weight and high stakes, Heidelberg United secured a vital 1-0 victory over the Preston Lions, ending the Lions’ undefeated start to the 2026 NPL Victoria season. Coming off a disappointing loss last week, the Bergers displayed defensive resilience and tactical ingenuity to extend Preston’s winless streak against them—a drought that stretches back to 2007.

The match began under a shroud of intensity typical of this long-standing rivalry. Heidelberg United dominated the early proceedings, moving the ball with fluidity and carving out several high-quality scoring opportunities. However, the finishing woes that plagued them in the previous week returned to haunt them in the final third.

Preston, buoyed by a home crowd at The Den, had their moments on the counter-attack, but the Bergers’ backline remained disciplined. Despite Heidelberg having the better of the play, both sides headed into the tunnels at the break with the scoreline deadlocked at 0-0.

The second half forced Heidelberg manager John Anastasiadis into early tactical adjustments due to injuries: Captain Ben Collins was forced off at the start of the half, replaced by Theodoropoulos, requiring a mid-game reorganisation of the central defence. Winger Joseph Lee made way for Jay McGowan, a substitution that would eventually prove to be the masterstroke of the afternoon.

While Preston attempted to capitalise on the defensive reshuffle, their attacks were largely subdued by a resilient and organised Heidelberg unit.

The deadlock was finally broken in the 67th minute. Substitute Jay McGowan made a searing run down the wing, beating his marker before delivering a pinpoint cross into the box. Asahi Yokokawa rose highest to meet the delivery, powering a header past the Preston goalkeeper to ignite the traveling supporters.

Goal: Asahi Yokokawa (67′) | Assist: Jay McGowan

The final twenty minutes saw Preston throw everything forward in a desperate attempt to salvage their unbeaten record. A series of last-minute attacks and set-pieces tested the Bergers’ resolve, but the defense held firm to see out the 1-0 result.
