Vale Brian Garvey

On behalf of everyone at Heidelberg United Alexander, we would like to pass on our sincere condolences to all family and friends of our former senior coach, Brian Garvey, who passed away recently, aged 88 years.

Garvey remained a well-loved figure at Heidelberg United long after his three years of coaching at the club, from 1984 to 1986. His coaching achievements in taking Alexander into the finals in all three seasons in the ultra-competitive National Soccer League & winning the 1985 Buffalo Gold Cup speak for themselves.

His team narrowly lost a grand final in his first year here and he was named Victorian Coach of the Year in 1984. But Garvey is even better remembered as being one of the genuine nice guys in the game, a  courteous gentleman at all times.

Garvey played a total of more than 500 games for English clubs, Hull City, Colchester United and Watford, before moving to Melbourne and coaching Heidelberg United. He later coached at South Melbourne and West Adelaide, but Garvey will always be remembered best as one of Alexander’s favorite sons.

Vale, Brian Garvey.
