As the A-League elites stagger and crash like drunks at open bar, Heidelberg United Alexander also slipped quietly slipped out of the 2026 Australia Cup at the hands of second division North Sunshine Eagles in Broadmeadows on Wednesday night. The rank outsiders snuck home after a harrowing but goalless 120 minutes culminated in a nerve-racking 4-3 Eagles penalty shoot-out success.
With just two A-League clubs remaining in the national cup series, this is shaping as a Steven Bradbury-esque upset year like no other. But after a match providing controversies, thrills, spills and 30 minutes of extra time it was the unlikely giant killers from North Sunshine who advanced to the final eight. And Alexander’s seemingly cursed big game run continued.
A red card, a penalty not converted and an ironic plot twist in the penalty shoot out ended the Warriors’ campaign. Oh, and there was Eagles goalkeeper Rory Brian. On a night when both goalkeepers excelled he and opposite number, Yaren Sozer, put on a show. But Brian survived a scandalous missing water bottle controversy as the game went to penalties and went on to pull off two game-winning stops.
Heidelberg actually led the penalty shoot-out after Ciaran Bramwell converted first and North Sunshine squandered their initial reply. Brian then went on to pick off Marcus Humbert and later Jay McGowan – clasping a rebound off an upright – to help steal an historic victory for a hardly-fancied North Sunshine side.
Humbert’s saved penalty was a particularly cruel blow as Humbert’s performance out of left-back was sensational on the night. He chased and tackled with ferocity and worked both ends of the ground, creating and contesting with skill and guile. He and the tearaway pace of Max Bisetto combined to keep North Sunshine nervous yet still intact heading toward half time.
At which point that familiar repetitive cadence of Heidelberg’s recent performances continued against the Eagles. Dominate time in possession, field position, passing numbers, shots on goal etc. before something goes awry. On Wednesday night that something was the 37th minute red card which took Warrior skipper Ben Collins out of the game and left the Warriors a man down for the next 80 minutes.
A long looping ball out of North Sunshine’s back third left Collins in a one-on-one footrace toward the northern end goal with Eagle Da Silva. A spot of physical contact, little guy – Da Silva – spectacularly hits the deck and bigger guy – Collins – cops a red card and potentially coughs up the game. To be fair, Collins hand might have brushed De Silva’s back. To be fair dinkum, Da Silva might do well to avoid the outdoors on a windy day.
Anthony Lesiotis was in everything as Heidelberg realigned after half time and the game opened up leaving both goalkeepers to take centre stage. Sozer tipped a fizzing free kick away, Niko Duarte’s dipping free kick was given similar treatment by Brian. Bisetto ripped one in from downtown, Brian parried and followed up with a deft change of direction to smother Duarte’s follow up.
With a quarter hour to play Humbert was denied one penalty shout and rewarded at second attempt minutes later. Brian previewed what was to follow by stopping Lesiotis’ conversion attempt and the follow-up from Jay McGowan. McGowan skied one at close range with seconds to play and Sozer produced two spectacular stops before a scoreless extra time period followed by the gut-wrenching penalties decider.
And with that the cup dream was snuffed out and the final focus for 2026 reverts to a now somewhat against-the-odds quest for back-to-back NPL Victoria championships. The Warriors host high-riding Hume City at headquarters at 3pm on Saturday in the third last game of the regular season.
