Heidelberg United kicked off their 2026 title defense in classic “Cardiac Kids” fashion on Friday night, overcoming a stubborn Green Gully side 2-1 at Olympic Village. Despite a massive squad overhaul in the off-season—including the departures of stalwarts like Mo Aidara & Bul Juach —the defending champions proved their depth is as formidable as ever. New signing Nicholas Duarte and the electric Asahi Yokokawa provided the spark needed to break down a “parked bus” and secure all three points.

The first half was a dominant display of possession from the Bergers, yet the scoreboard remained stubbornly blank. Heidelberg’s attack looked sharp but lacked the finishing touch, missing a penalty early on and seeing a goal-bound strike rattle the crossbar. As the teams headed into the sheds at 0-0, the tension at the Village was palpable. The crowd knew that dominance without goals often leads to heartbreak—and in the 60th minute, that fear became reality.

Green Gully capitalized on a rare set-piece opportunity. A well-placed corner found its target, putting the visitors up 1-0. With the lead in hand, Gully immediately retreated into a defensive shell, daring the champions to find a way through their packed backline.

Heidelberg refused to panic. After a brilliant fingertip save from the Gully keeper sent the ball over the bar, the Bergers made the resulting corner count. Nicholas Duarte, the former Central Coast Mariners prospect, rose above the pack to hammer home a powerful header, leveling the score and igniting the home crowd. With the momentum firmly in their favor, the “Berger Train” went into overdrive. The decisive moment came when Asahi Yokokawa carved his way into the box, his footwork proving too much for the tiring Gully defence. Yokokawa was brought down, earning the penalty that would decide the match. Anthony Lesiotis stepped up to the spot and made no mistake, slamming the ball into the back of the net to make it 2-1 and ensure the title defense started with a victory.

New Era, Same Grit

The win marks a successful debut for several of Heidelberg’s off-season recruits, who were brought in to fill the void left by key departures.

Squad Transition Tracker Departures: Ryan Govan (GK), Jamal Ali, John Apostolopoulos, Ajdin Fetahagic, Delibor Markovic, Cherif Mohamed Aidara, Eoghan Stokes, and Bul Juach.

Technical Director Nick Deligiannis had praised the squad’s hunger during the pre-season, and Friday night’s “never-say-die” attitude suggested that the championship fire still burns bright at the Village.
