Heidelberg United Alexander has secured a spot in Round 5 of this season’s Dockerty / FFA Cup on the back of a comfortable 2-0 win over fellow NPL club, St Albans. A warm and gusty afternoon at Churchill Reserve made fluent football a difficult proposition, with precise passing moves at a premium.
The Bergers took an early lead heading to the Fox Street end, aided by the wind. Lesiotis’ tenacious work set up McGowan on the left, who got in behind the defence, finding the head of Sabit Ngor to power home from 8 metres. Despite controlling the game for most of the first half, Heidelberg was unable to add to the tally, with Yokokawa’s effort off the woodwork coming the closest to doubling the advantage.
The second half saw the home side ramp up the pressure in the early phases, forcing two fine saves from Berger custodian Ryan Govan. Despite those scares, eventually the Bergers edged back on top of the contest, but to their frustration, missed some gilt edged opportunities. It was substitute Max Bisetto that set up the second for Fulton to finish deep into the second half, capping off a fine game for the Heidelberg #7, securing the deserved victory for his team.
A Round 5 home tie versus State League South East 1 side Hampton East Brighton SC is next in that competition. However, an ANZAC Day blockbuster is where the immediate attention will be focused – with Heidelberg Alexander set to host NPL leader Avondale at the Olympic Village in a much anticipated clash.
