FFA CUP

The Football Federation Australia Cup, commonly known as the FFA Cup, is the main national soccer knockout cup competition in Australia. The annual competition is organised by and named after Football Federation Australia. It features all the teams from the top division, the A-League, as well as from lower tiers in the Australian leagues, including the National Premier Leagues. Teams enter the competition in progressional stages, with qualifying rounds used to determine which lower division teams eventually join those from the A-League in later stages of the cup. It is currently sponsored by the Westfield Group and thus officially known as the Westfield FFA Cup.

In 2015 Heidelberg United set tongues wagging for many reasons. That year Heidelberg United set the fastest ever goal in the FFA cup when striker Dan Heffernan scored in 26 seconds in R16 against Sydney United.  Heidelberg United went on to meet Melbourne City in the Quarter Final in front of a record crowd of 11,372 fans and with the second largest crowd for a FFA Cup game. The game was a highly anticipated encounter, for Heidelberg United it was proof that the national stage beckons for its recall one day. Secondly, for the fans and pulling power of the club, it recruited former Greek Captain (116 caps) for the game as a guest player which sent the media and football world into a frenzy that year. Despite losing 5-0 we left our mark on the stage.

In 2016 we failed to emulate the success of the previous year. Injuries had ravaged the team and in the preliminary qualifiers the club was forced into drastic team reshuffling and had to seek for special permission to sign a keeper for its qualifying game against Green Gully due to injuries to its first and second keepers. In addition to those worries was the injury list to its regular outfield players. Heidelberg lost to Green Gully 1-0.

In 2017 we have once again progressed to the R32 and we face A-League outfit Perth Glory beating them 1-0. We continued our good form in the FFA Cup with a hard fought win against Sydney United, becoming eventual winners in a penalty shoot out. Our next opponent in the QTR Finals we drew Adelaide United. Unfortunately we lost 3-0.
