German Media Highlights Our Club’s Global Documentary Journey
The international spotlight is shining brightly on Heidelberg United FC! A featured report by Germany’s Rhein-Neckar-Zeitung has highlighted an extraordinary documentary project currently in production, connecting our home in Melbourne to our ancestral roots in Greece and our namesake city of Heidelberg, Germany.
From Australia Cup Glory to a Global Narrative
The documentary project, helmed by Australian director Nick Piper, was sparked by Heidelberg United’s historic and sensational run in the Australia Cup 2025. Eliminating three established professional clubs on our journey, Alexander cemented its status as one of the most successful semi-professional clubs in Australia and New Zealand.
Recognising this “sporting fairytale,” Piper pitched the story to major streaming services. The pitch was picked up by Paramount Plus, paving the way for a full feature-length documentary.
Exploring Culture, Community, and Connection
While our pitch performance initiated the project, the documentary explores far more than just standard on-pitch action. The film crew has embarked on a global journey to uncover the deep roots of our club:
Melbourne, Australia: Documenting our home ground at Olympic Village and our community of supporters built since our founding by Greek immigrants in 1958.
Florina, Greece: Traveling back to Southern Europe to visit the origin region of many of our founding members.
Heidelberg, Germany: Visiting our namesake city on the Neckar River to bridge connections between football communities across oceans.
As director Nick Piper noted, the narrative rests on three core values: “Culture, Community, and Connection.”
Visiting SG Heidelberg-Kirchheim From August 20 to 22, 2026, the Australian production crew spent three days in Germany with local club SG Heidelberg-Kirchheim (SGK).
During the visit, the crew interviewed local figures—including Heidelberg Mayor Eckart Würzner—and captured authentic footage of SGK’s head coach Christian Schäfer, captain Marc Haffa, and long-serving player Jonas “João” Rehm. The shoot culminated with live matchday coverage of SGK’s season opener in the Verbandsliga Nordbaden against VfR Mannheim.
SGK Chairman Uwe Hollmichel expressed deep appreciation for the project, noting the youth section of Heidelberg United was of particular interest. Given that Heidelberg United also maintains a high-level youth performance center in Melbourne, Hollmichel welcomed potential future exchanges between our two clubs.
