A historic cross-town hoodoo was broken at Olympic Village as a wasteful Heidelberg United suffered a frustrating 1-0 defeat to rivals Preston Lions. The result marks Preston’s first competitive victory over the Bergers since 2008, compounding a stretch of indifferent form for the home side.

Despite dominating large stretches of possession and dictating the tempo of the match, Heidelberg lacked the clinical edge that defined their brilliant 2025 campaign.

From the opening whistle, the Bergers looked structured and controlled, routinely breaking into the final third. However, a familiar issue returned to haunt John Anastasiadis’s men: a total absence of spark in front of goal. Clear-cut opportunities were consistently squandered or broken up by a resolute Preston defence.

As Heidelberg pushed bodies forward in search of a breakthrough, they left themselves vulnerable to the counter-attack. The decisive blow came late when Preston’s Luke Francis found the net, silencing the Olympic Village crowd and ensuring all three points went back across town.

With only 9 games remaining in the 2026 NPL Victoria season, Heidelberg United remains in 4th place with 30 points—flanked by Oakleigh Cannons, Hume City, and Avondale FC in the race for the championship.

While still firmly in final-series contention, the Bergers’ current trajectory is a cause for major concern. If they are to truly challenge for the silverware, Anastasiadis’s men must find a quick fix to their scoring woes.
