Super Sub Secure the Points for Heidelberg

Heidelberg United continued their perfect start to the 2026 NPL Victoria season with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over a resilient Dandenong Thunder side on Saturday night. Despite controlling the tempo for much of the evening, the reigning champions were forced to rely on tactical depth to unlock a stubborn Thunder defence.

The “Bergers” asserted their authority early, dominating possession and pinning the hosts into their own half. However, despite the slick build-up play, the scoreboard remained unticked. Dandenong Thunder’s defensive block held firm under heavy pressure, sending both teams into the tunnel at 0-0.

The second period began much like the first, with Heidelberg swinging for a knockout blow that wouldn’t land. Sensing the need for a spark, coach John Anastasiadis turned to his bench, introducing the dangerous McGowan and last week’s hero Durante.

The impact was almost instantaneous. The fresh legs stretched the weary Dandenong backline, and after a sequence of brilliant team build-up, McGowan found the back of the net to break the deadlock. Heidelberg managed the remaining minutes with composure to secure their second consecutive win and another vital clean sheet.

With 6 points from 2 matches, Heidelberg United are sitting pretty at the top end of the table
