The Champs Are Back For The Community Shield

by John Fotinos
It’s down to business for 2025 for the reigning NPL Champions at the Home of the Matildas this Friday. Heidelberg United’s Women’s team make a return to the venue where they triumphantly took out the Premiership Cup in 2024. They meet a storied old rival in Bulleen Lions, in a battle for the first trophy in 2025, the Community Shield, ahead of the opening round of the NPL next week.
Coach Dennis Georgakopoulos, who took the reins late in the 2024 season, returns full time in the role. At his disposal, he will have a team with several personnel changes ahead of the 2025 season opener. There has been more than a dozen new players added to the Senior squad, with 11 departures in a major reshuffle. Captain Stephanie Galea will head a team mixed with experience and youth coming through the system, with nine first team players plus new signings ready to contest for the preseason Community Shield.
It’s always a great rivalry and expect nothing less, and with no form guide to go by, expect another tight and well contested match.
The action kicks off at 7:30pm this Friday (March 7) at the Home of the Matildas.
