Late drama was always on the cards in an absorbing contest between combatants with vastly contrasting fortunes so fan in 2024.
Heidelberg United eventually took all three points against a seemingly luckless Moreland City. The ‘Bergers stretched their unbeaten start to 10 matches, consigning the visitors to a tenth straight defeat.
Coach John Anastasiadis was all too aware that this would be a stern test for his side. The visitors took it up to the ‘Bergers form the outset, as if to confirm Anastasiadis’ pre-game notion that his team was up against a side that belied its previous nine results.
Moreland took a first half lead, capitalising on some uncharacteristically untidy Heidelberg passing, leading to Apai Ukuno finishing off a counter attack. The visitors were effective in blunting Heidelberg’s forays, taking a 1-0 lead into the main break.
Anastasiadis’ half time substitutions, bringing on Ellis and Lesiotis, seemed to spark up the proceedings. Ellis turned provider on the hour mark, feeding Kaine Sheppard, who levelled up the match at 1-1. Just three minutes later, the home crowd was abuzz with a Sean Ellis masterclass – the Scotsman finishing a trademark jinking run across the pitch to fire home an unstoppable missile from all of 20 metres. In the blink of an eye, the game turned on its head.
Not to be denied, the visitors struck back in an instant through Corey Thomas, setting up an intriguing last third of a see sawing battle. Both sides intent on attack, but growingly wary that the slightest mistake could prove fatal. Heidelberg dominating possession, probing for an opening – Moreland disciplined and compact in defence, but always at the ready for a swift counter attack.
Just as it seemed that Moreland City might just grab its first point of the season, the ‘Bergers pressure finally took its toll – with a precise move involving several players, with Anthony Lesiotis finding space behind the back four, eventually squaring the ball to Josh Pin for a straightforward tap in finish. A fitting end for a topsy turvy match, with a sublime moment of brilliance to brake the deadlock. A mixture of relief and joy for the home contingent – devastation and heartbreak for Moreland City.
