Bergers Fall Short

Heidelberg United gave it their all, but ultimately fell short, going down against Hume City 1-0 on Saturday evening at ABD Stadium.

The ‘Bergers headed to Broadmeadows looking to continue their 10-game undefeated run, however a narrow defeat has handed Heidelberg just their second loss in the 2021 NPL Victoria season – its first since back in Round 1 against South Melbourne.

The difference maker was Josh Bingham, who gave Hume the three points on 37 minutes with a clever turn and finish in behind for the only goal of the match..

While the Bergers didn’t get on the scoresheet themselves, you could make the case that at least one chance had to go in.

Relentless pressure in the second half and very narrow misses highlighted the Bergers’ attacking credentials, but somehow nothing found its way into the back of the net. On any other night, Ninkovic might have bagged a hat-trick, with other notable efforts by Ellis and Ashton also narrowly wide of the mark.

It proved to be one of those nights where you can do everything in your power to try and score, but it’s not always meant to be, with the ‘Bergers left to ponder what might have been.

While the result wasn’t what the ‘Bergers searched for to jump up to second place on the table, what an opportunity it will be for a response against one of the main rival sides in the competition – the current league leaders Avondale FC. The match kicks off at 3:00pm this Sunday (May 23) at the Olympic Village.
