Friday night under the lights at Heidelberg United was not just an ordinary night of football. It was a night filled with triumph, nostalgia, and camaraderie. While the Heidelberg United Men’s senior team secured a resounding 6-0 victory, it was the remarkable performance of the women’s veterans team on the side pitch that stole the spotlight, clinching a remarkable 10-1 win in the newly formed Women’s Legacy League
The veterans team comprised esteemed players such as Mankowsa, Camileri, Pannella, Neville, Balta, and more. These legends of the game, affectionately known as the “greats,” came together once again, eager to relive their glory days. In the spirit of the famous Blues Brothers movie quote, they were “putting the band back together again.” On the sidelines watching the game were other greats Alison Brain & Marisa Bonnici who came to lend some support.
Just like yesteryear Melanie Camilleri was slotting goals for fun with (6) of the best and she was supported admirably by Belinda Pannella with (2) & Lucy Balta with (2). On the other end of the pitch legend keeper Katie Neville didn’t have much to do with her defenders stopping each attack.
Months of hard work and determination from John Lioupas and Rita paved the way for this momentous occasion. They tirelessly reached out to former teammates, convincing them to rejoin the team and make the dream a reality. Sources speculated wild promises of free souvlakia for signing on at Heidelberg United certainly added to the excitement but alas the players were happy to pay for the ‘”famous” souvlakia. Rita jokingly acknowledges that the incentive may have played a small part in convincing some players, but ultimately, it was the opportunity to reunite and relive cherished memories that won them over. As the night drew to a close, the veterans team celebrated their triumphant return to the game they hold dear.
The players were simply thrilled to reunite with old friends and reignite their passion for the game. Some of them hadn’t seen each other in years, and the night felt like a joyful reunion, filled with laughter and banter. Though age may have slowed down the veterans, their skills still shone brightly on the field.
Senior women’s coach Lou Spiridis was among the intrigued spectators and was genuinely impressed by their performance. In fact, some of these remarkable women are still good enough to play senior NPL football. The night was packed with memorable highlights, leaving the crowd in awe. Undoubtedly, the healthy crowd that witnessed their triumph will eagerly return to support them in future games.
Their legacy as football greats was solidified once again, and their remarkable skills served as a testament to their dedication and love for the sport. This unforgettable night will forever hold a special place in their hearts, reminding them that age is just a number when it comes to pursuing one’s passion. As they continue their journey their fans eagerly anticipate witnessing more memorable moments from these incredible athletes.
